Permanent endowments and other philanthropic funds (Flow through and Hosted Organization) are vital community resources now and for the future. Our fund investment portfolio consists of more than 100 individual philanthropic funds, representing a wide range of purposes and a diversity of fund development arrangements. We work with our donors to find the best ways possible for them to participate, learn and serve their communities while meeting their charitable goals.
Permanent Endowed Funds are established and built by donors making tax receiptable gifts which are placed in long term investments. Fund income is used to provide granting according to the donor’s wishes to qualified charitable causes.
Categories of Permanent Endowed Funds at the Community Foundation of PEI (CFPEI)
Scholarships
Scholarship funds are created with money invested so that awards may be granted annually to Island students attending post-secondary schools, according to criteria decided by the donor or determined by the CFPEI in the interest of the donor.
Architects’ Association of Prince Edward Island Scholarship Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established by the Architects Association of PEI in 2004 to help Island students pursue degreed studies (bachelor, masters, doctoral) in the field of architecture.
Arthur and Theresa MacDonald Charitable Trust
This scholarship was established through a trust in the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Macdonald in 2011. This Scholarship Fund is to assist Island students who are in a PEI post-secondary program and who could benefit from financial assistance. The second component to this fund provides Field of Interest grants to organizations that support poverty relief, education, and health and welfare.
Brodie McCarthy Memorial Leadership Scholarship Fund
On May 13th, 2018, eighteen year old Montague High School student Brodie McCarthy passed away as the result of head injuries sustained during a school rugby match. As a lasting honour to his legacy, the Brodie McCarthy Memorial Leadership Scholarship was established and is awarded annually to a Montague High School student who will be attending a post-secondary institution after graduation and who exemplifies Brodie’s qualities of leadership, community involvement, academics and athletics.
Christian Gavard Memorial Scholarship
The Christian Gavard Memorial Fund was established at the Community Foundation of PEI by the Gavard family to honour the life of their son and brother Christian. Each year, a select number of Island students are given the opportunity receive a Christian Gavard Memorial Award to attend a week at Island Rock Camps!
Christian Gavard was a son, brother, husband, friend, teacher, musician, actor, and producer. He graduated from Bluefield High School in Prince Edward Island and went on to a successful career in the performing arts. He was a singer, saxophonist, and drummer in several bands, as well as an actor in theatre and on television. Christian motivated and encouraged numerous friends and colleagues in the pursuit of their artistic goals.
He completed his studies at McGill university, graduating with a teaching degree and found a job at Laurier MacDonald High School in Montreal, Quebec. Through his dedication and genuine interest in each individual, he inspired a great number of students to pursue their dreams.
Coles Family Fund
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. This combination Scholarship Fund and Field of Interest Fund was established in 2012. The fund is to provide scholarships to students attending UPEI or Holland College undertaking studies related to history, political studies or heritage restoration. The fund will also provide support for the George Coles Education Series or related heritage and/or historic initiatives. The fund will also provide grants to cover the costs of the George Coles and Mercy Haines-Coles family grave headstones.
Dr. Gerry Barrett Dental Association of PEI Legacy Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by the Dental Association of PEI and transferred to the CFPEI in 2010. The fund was created in honour of Dr. Gerry Barrett, an esteemed long-time Island dentist. The award is granted to an Island student enrolled in a Dentistry program at Dalhousie University. A second component to the fund is a Field of Interest Fund that provides a grant to a charity that offers services and programs to benefit dental patients in financial need.
Gordon Doughart Memorial Award
This Memorial Award was established by the parents of Gordon Doughart in 2016. Gordon was a talented Red Seal chef whose sense of humor, generosity and strong work ethic earned the respect and support of friends and co-workers. He was a very devoted husband and father. He enjoyed and competed in a variety of sports with a particular passion for hockey and golf.
Joan Auld Scholarship Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by the Prince Edward Island Crafts Council in honour of Joan Auld. Joan’s career was as a Craft Development Officer with the PEI Department of Business Development. She worked for over 30 years to support the craft industry on PEI.
Joseph Spriet Scholarship
This Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by the Province of PEI in honor of the tremendous contribution that Joseph Spriet made to the 2009 Canada Games Host Society. The award recipient will be in studies related to human services, business, sports or agriculture and who can demonstrate 200 hours of volunteer work with sports and/or charitable organizations.
Joyce Paynter Memorial Education Award
This fund was established in 2019 by friends and family of Joyce Paynter, to provide a memorial award to a deserving student attending UPEI, Holland College or Collège Acadie Î.-P.-É., to pay tribute to the legacy she left serving her country, her family and her community and in particular, The Royal Canadian Legion.
Lorne and Ruby Bonnell Scholarship
This Scholarship Fund was established in 2000 by the late Dr. Lorne and Ruby Bonnell for a student pursuing M.SC.
Lowell Phillips Scholarship Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 and transferred to the Community Foundation of PEI in 1999. The fund was created by friends and associates of Lowell Phillips to honour and celebrate how Mr. Phillips faced adversity and courageously overcame challenges throughout his life.
McIver Family Awards Fund
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. This combination Scholarship Fund and Designated Fund was established in 2015. It is a fund that will provide scholarships to graduates of Kinkora Regional High school and grants to assist students with disabilities. Grants are also designated for the upkeep of the St. Malachy’s cemetery.
Montague - Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in 2018 by the Hennebery Family to recognize the role their parents, Mary and Reg Hennebery, played in establishing and supporting the Montague – Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games. Mary and her brother, Ernie McKenna, co-founded the Goodwill Games in 1969.
Noreen and George Corrigan Scholarship Fund
This renewable Scholarship Fund was established in 2013 by Noreen Corrigan, a Charlottetown business woman who, on behalf of she and her husband George, established two renewable award categories:
- Learning Disability: Scholarship is awarded to an Island student with specific learning disabilities to attend a post-secondary institution.
- Single Mother: Scholarship is awarded to a single mother who is enrolled in and/or attending a post-secondary school.
Orin Carver Scholarship Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 at the close of the Canada Winter Games to honour and recognize the leadership of Orin Carver who served as President of the games. Mr. Carver passed in 2001.
PEI Protestant Children’s Trust
The PEI Protestant Children’s Trust was established by the PEI Protestant Children’s Trust in recognition of its long association with the care and education of Prince Edward Island’s Protestant young people. The Scholarship Fund awards are for Holland College students. First priority will be given to applicants with no living parents; second priority to applicants with only one parent; and third priority to applicants with parents not capable of providing financial support further education as required. Award recipient will receive 50% of the award on or before the start date of the program, and will receive the other 50% at the midpoint of their first year of their program, provided the Registrar confirms the student has good academic standing.
St. Andrew’s Society Scholarship Fund
The St. Andrew’s Society established the Scholarship Fund in the 1980s. The purpose of this Scholarship Fund is to provide Island residents, who are of Scottish Catholic descent, with a scholarship in aid of furthering their education in a post-secondary education institution.
St. John Lodge No. 1 – Ross Estates Bursary
The St. John Lodge – Ross Estates Bursary was established by the estate of John and Muriel Ross, and transferred to the Community Foundation of PEI in 2012. This Scholarship Fund awards are granted to a direct descendent of a PEI Mason.
Stephen Turner Memorial Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 in honour of Stephen Turner, an activist in and devoted member of the political scene of PEI.
Summerside-Natick International Friendship Hockey Fund
In 2001, founding members of the International Friendship Hockey Series Committee established the Summerside- Natick International Friendship Hockey Fund. This Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship to a student, involved in the Summerside Area Minor Hockey Association, entering into their first year of post-secondary studies.
TRH Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Legacy Fund
This Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 with initial funding by Mary Dunea and the Government of PEI to mark the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Prince Edward Island. Income earned from the fund provides scholarships to PEI students attending a PEI post-secondary institution. Students in financial need and who demonstrate leadership experience and volunteer support to causes attributed to the Royal couple, such as disadvantaged youth, military families, and conservation, may apply.
Willard F. Cameron Scholarship
This scholarship endowment fund was established as a tribute to Willard F. Cameron who passed away in January 2017. He was initiated into the Western Star Lodge No. 50 in Westville N.S in 1951. He became affiliated with St. John’s Lodge No. 1 in 1974 and after serving in the different offices of the lodge became the Worshipful Master of St. John’s Lodge in 1982. He served for his beloved fraternity for 64 years. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student attending a Canadian University or College.
Community Fund
Fund income is used by the CFPEI to make grants in the Fund’s name to existing and emerging worthy Island causes.

Edith and Eric C. Robinson Fund
This Community Fund was created by Edith Robinson in 2001 to honour the memory of her late husband Eric who died in 1996. Edith passed away in 2004. The income from this fund is used to make grants to local Island organizations to enhance the quality of life for Islanders.
Fund 1 (Anonymous)
This Community Fund was created in 2002 by an anonymous donor. The income earned supports the work of Island charitable organizations.
Island Fund
This Community Fund was established in 1998 by the Community Foundation of PEI. Income earned from the fund is used to support existing and emerging charitable needs and organizations.
Thomas F. and Katherine W. Upson Fund
This Community Fund was created by Thomas and Katherine Upson in 2006 to provide grants to existing and emerging charitable needs and organizations.

Designated Fund
Specific organizations are supported each year with a continuous flow of grant money determined by income on the fund invested.
Basilica Bells Trust Fund
We are pleased to announce that all of this fund has been donated to the Basilica Bells Funds. On July 1, 2017, the Bells of St. Dunstan’s Basilica rang out again.
Beach Tennis Club Trust Fund
The Beach Tennis Club Inc. of Stanhope PEI created this Designated Fund in 2006. It provides travel coverage for athletes for off Island competitions or goes toward tennis program delivery on PEI.
CFPEI Administration Fund
This Designated Fund was established by the Community Foundation board in 1999 to assist with the operating expenses of the Community Foundation of PEI.
Cumberland – Rocky Point Woman’s Institute Legacy Fund
The Cumberland – Rocky Point Woman’s Institute established this Designated Fund in 2006 as a way to honour the contribution of past and present Institute members. Income earned provides grants to the Westwood Primary School and Elliot River Elementary School libraries to purchase literacy materials and to support literacy programs.
Dr. Marlene Bryenton – Joseph A. Ghiz Park Fund
This Designated Fund was created by Dr. Marlene Bryenton, past IODE member, in order to carry on the work initiated by the IODE Centennial Millennium Park. The park was renamed the Joseph A. Ghiz Memorial Park and the income provides for the costs of flowers and general maintenance of the park.
Friends of Camp Seggie Trust
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. This Designated Fund was established in 2012. The purpose of this fund is to provide an annual operating grant to Camp Seggie.
Hesta MacDonald Legacy Fund
This Designated Fund was established by Hesta MacDonald in 2006 to provide an annual grant alternating between Queen Charlotte Junior High School and Belfast Consolidated School for the purchase of books for the school library.
Indian River Festival Property Endowment Fund
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. This Designated Fund was established by Indian River Festival Association Inc. in partnership with the Community Foundation of PEI in 2009 to provide an annual grant for property upkeep and maintenance of the Indian River Festival.
J. Melville and Mary P. Campbell Fund
This Designated Fund was established in 2005 by Mary Campbell in honour of her late husband J. Melville Campbell, a prominent Summerside business man, lawyer and former mayor of Summerside. Earnings from this fund provide grants in support of youth activities to the Summerside Boys and Girls Club. A second component of the fund provides grants to youth activities in the Summerside area, a Field of Interest Fund.
Jack Blanchard Music Program for Kids
This Designated Fund was initiated in 2011 by a Committee dedicated to raising funds to establish an annual grant program to help cover the costs of music lessons in elementary school for kids in financial need. This fund was created to honor Jack Blanchard’s lifetime contribution bringing music to Islanders.
Jessie Drummond Public Speaking Awards Fund
This Designated Fund was established by Stuart Drummond in 2007 in memory of his mother who was active in public speaking. In order to promote public speaking skill development, earnings from the fund provide an award to recipients of the annual 4-H Speaking Competition.
Katharyn Myers Lea Endowment
This Designated Fund was created in 2004 to honour Katharyn Myers Lea who passed in 1983. The fund provides an annual award to the Englewood School in Crapaud, PEI. The grant provides financial support to school projects that are beyond core curriculum and that aim to enhance the educational experience for current and/or future students.
L.M. Montgomery Land Trust Operating Endowment Fund
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. This Designated Fund was established in 2006 to provide an annual operating grant to the L.M. Montgomery Land Trust.
MacMillan-Bagnall Shrine Trust
This Designated Fund was established in 2016 by the Island Shrine Club. Income earned provides a grant to the Philae Temple Crippled Children Travel Fund.

North Tryon Women’s Institute Legacy Fund
This Designated Fund was established by the North Tryon Women’s institute in 2010 from the proceeds of the sale of the North Tryon School property and publication of the community history “Remember Yesterday”. Income provides grants annually to support Englewood Music & Library Programs, Prince County Hospital Pediatric Wing, and the upkeep of Lord’s Pond nature area by the Tryon River Watershed Cooperative.
PEI Family Violence Prevention Services Endowment
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. This Designated Fund was established in 2016 through the generosity of donors to ensure an ongoing source of funding to support the delivery of programs and services of the PEI Family Violence Prevention Services across the Island.
PEI Golf Association Junior Golf Development Fund
Granting year to be determined, fund is building. The annual grant will be payable to the PEI Golf Association for junior golf initiatives via Sport PEI.
Donor Advised Fund
The Donor continues to be involved in deciding which charitable organizations are to be supported each year.
2009 Canada Games Dreams and Champions Legacy Trust
This Donor Advised Fund was established in 2011 to celebrate the 2009 Canada Games held in Prince Edward Island. Income from the fund will provide financial and other material support to programs that enhance the development of coaches, administrators, and officials; and, help support and sustain any facilities built for the 2009 Canada Games. The annual grant is allocated to Sport PEI who, with direction from the Canada Games Host Society Legacy Trust Committee, disperses the grants.
Catherine G. Hennessey Endowment Fund
This Donor Advised Fund was established in 2010 by the City of Charlottetown in honour of Catherine Hennessey, Charlottetown resident and writer, researcher and heritage consultant and educator. Initial funding for this fund was provided through a May 2010 Fundraiser hosted by the City of Charlottetown in honour of Catherine Hennessey’s achievements. Income from this fund is used to create learning experiences that enhance urban design and promote heritage preservation.
Glendenning Family Fund
This Donor Advised Fund was established in 2006 by descendants of Elmer and Jane (Watling) Glendenning of Little Branch, NB, to honour their parents by providing grants that support community interests that improves the quality of life for the residents of Black River.
Hon. Frank & Dorothy Lewis Community Strength Fund
This endowment fund was established as a tribute to Hon. Frank Lewis, O.P.E.I., Lieutenant Governor of PEI from 2011 to 2017, and Dorothy Lewis, O.P.E.I., for her lifelong commitment to volunteer service, community building and their natural gift for hospitality and example of hard work. This fund will make financial contributions toward small to medium scale community-strengthening projects for PEI not-for-profit, community organizations and municipalities. Eligible projects include mental health and wellness programs in PEI, youth physical fitness programs, parents and pre-school children initiatives, seniors in-home care, community centre improvements and community history projects and publications.
Dr. Donald K. Taylor Memorial Fund
This Donor Advised Fund was created by friends and family to honour and remember Dr. Donald K. Taylor who died in 2000. This fund provides grants to health and well-being causes.
Field of Interest Fund
On behalf of the donor, grants are given by the CFPEI to charitable organizations for projects in the field of interest specified by the donors in the Fund Agreements.
Agricultural Heritage Equipment Fund
This Field of Interest Fund was established by the Community Foundation of PEI in 2003 with an initial contribution by Dr. Tom Hall. The annual grant is to provide the identification, retrieval, restoration, documentation, storage and display of heritage agricultural equipment.
Alzheimer Society of PEI Foundation Inc.
This Field of Interest Fund was established by the Alzheimer Society of PEI Foundation Inc. in 2011. The fund will provide grants to organizations that provide care for persons suffering from Alzheimer disease or related dementias through public education initiatives about Alzheimer disease or related dementias, and/or support services to persons with the disease and their caregivers.

This Field of Interest Fund was transferred to the CFPEI in 2011 by the committee of the Arthur and Theresa MacDonald Trust. Income from the fund will be used to provide grants to organizations that support poverty relief, education, and health and welfare. David A. MacKay Fund
This Field of Interest Fund was established by David MacKay’s family in 2006 in honour of Mr. MacKay. The Income from this fund is used to make grants to improve the cardiac emergency response system on Prince Edward Island.
David Jiggs MacDonald and Gerry Rutten Music Legacy Fund
This Field of Interest Fund was established in 2011 to honour the memory of two prominent members of the Island musical community. Both men had influenced the lives of many students and the Island population. The income from this fund, commonly referred to as the Jiggs and Gerry Fund, awards grants that support Island musicians and community groups.

Granting year to be determined, fund is building. The Field of Interest Fund was established in 2010.
Gertie and Henry Purdy Visual Arts Fund
This Fund was established by Henry and Gertie Purdy to help Island Artists in the Visual Arts field. This grant will help support any activity that encourages and supports visual arts in training, promotion, exhibition space and leadership in and to the field. The visual arts includes such areas as drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.
Island Arts and Heritage Stabilization Project Fund
This Field of Interest Fund was established by the Community Foundation using residual funds from the Island Arts and Heritage Stabilization Program of 2005. Income from the fund provides grants to the Island Arts and Heritage sector to promote its sustainability.
J. Melville Campbell Fund
This Field of Interest Fund was established by Mary Campbell in honour of her late husband J. Melville Campbell, a prominent Summerside business man, lawyer and former mayor of Summerside. Living Memorial Trust Fund
This Field of Interest Fund was created in 2007 by Elinore Keuper in honour of her late husband Dr. Charles Stuerke Keuper, who relished the natural beauty of his adopted home of PEI. It was created to provide grants to maintain and enhance private and public spaces that aid in the greening of Prince Edward Island, using native species when available.

PEI Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Trust
This Trust award is designated to be made to the PEI Sports Hall of Fame and Museum to support its ongoing work promoting and celebrating the achievements of Island athletes.
Souris Community Fund
The Souris Fund was established in 2004 by an anonymous donor in order to benefit the community of Souris. Grants from this Field of Interest Fund are allocated to support charitable interests and priorities in the Souris area.
Steve McQuaid Memorial Endowment
The Steve McQuaid Memorial Endowment has been established by his family to honour his life’s work and passion for assisting the Island’s nonprofit sector, helping them to strengthen their efforts to build smart and caring communities throughout PEI. Earnings from the endowment will be used to host the annual Steve McQuaid Memorial Symposium providing an opportunity for non-profit organizations to network and discuss common issues and to “pollinate” ideas. Steve McQuaid served as President of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of PEI.
Summer Islanders Legacy Fund
Several summer island residents established this Field of Interest Fund with the CFPEI in 2006 in order to encourage “Summer Islanders” to return each year. Income earned from this fund supports activities that celebrate the Island as the special place summer residents call home.
Legacy Society Fund (Estate)
The Legacy Society contains Funds set up by donors who have formally stated their intention to leave the CFPEI in their will as a beneficiary of an estate or insurance policy or who will initiate a scholarship and/or grant allocation at their time of death.
Catherine Callbeck Endowment Fund
The Catherine Callbeck Endowment Fund has been established to support worthy organizations. Presently, these organizations are: the PEI Music Festival, the PEI Rural Beautification Society, the PEI Humane Society and the Duke of Edinburgh International.
Cheryl and Dr. Harry Callaghan Paediatric Trust
This Legacy Society Fund was established in 2010 by Cheryl Callaghan in memory of her late husband Dr. Harry Callaghan, a prominent Island physician. This fund will provide grants to charities to provide travel supports and assistance for paediatric patients who need to travel off Island for medical treatment.
Four Oaks Endowment Fund
Blake Doyle and Dr. Kathy Morrison created the Four Oaks Endowment Fund in honour of their four children: Alexa, Ben, Sophie, and Lauren. The fund supports various charitable activities by both groups and individuals.
The Helen & Stan Buell Endowment
The Helen & Stan Buell Endowment was established in 2015 by the Buells to create a flow of funding for various causes and non-profit organizations they wish to support into the future.

The Legacy Society Fund was established in 2015.
Fund 6
This anonymous fund has been created to be granted on an ongoing basis to various causes and non-profit organizations. Such causes include health, education, environment, and culture.
Hazel and John Robinson Fund
This Legacy Society Fund was established by John and Hazel Robinson in 2014. The fund will provide a source of financial support for the Island community’s existing and emerging charitable priorities, as determined by the CFPEI, and to support two named organizations.
Heather Henry MacDonald Endowment Fund
This Legacy Society Fund was established in 2014 by Heather Henry MacDonald. The fund will provide a source of financial support for the Island community’s existing and emerging charitable priorities, as determined by the CFPEI.
Terra Nova Endowment Fund
Patricia and Bruce Craig established this Legacy Society Fund in 2012. The fund will provide grants to support: health and human services, history, heritage, environment, performing arts, writing and journalism, and animal welfare.
Thomas and Betty Hall Endowment Trust
This Fund was established in 2010 to support numerous causes and individuals on PEI. The Fund supports causes such as education, heritage, culture, wildlife preservation, and the environment.

Hosted Organization Fund
The purpose of this Fund is to provide a fund hosting service for CRA qualified organizations to access investment services for their own reserve funds. The fund is not permanently endowed with CFPEI and the Host Organization may access in part or whole the fund and income earned at its request.
