On May 13th, 2018, eighteen year old Montague High School student Brodie McCarthy passed away as the result of head injuries sustained during a school rugby match.
Brodie was a young man who excelled both academically and athletically in rugby, hockey and soccer. As a cherished son, brother and friend he was described as popular, fun-loving and as someone who supported in a positive way all those he came in contact with.
After high school graduation in June, Brodie was looking forward to the next stage in his life, having been accepted into the Holland College Sport and Leisure Management program with his long-term goal to become a physiotherapist.
More proof of the young man’s exceptional character was his desire to be an organ donor, a wish he conveyed to his parents following the Humboldt hockey team bus tragedy earlier this year.
As a lasting honour to his legacy, the Brodie McCarthy Memorial Leadership Scholarship has been established and will be awarded annually to a Montague High School student who will be attending a post-secondary institution in the Fall and who exemplifies his qualities of leadership, community involvement, academics and athletics.
