The Tom and Eleanor Davies Memorial Endowment Fund will provide an annual grant, in perpetuity, to two PEI organizations which make an important contribution to the quality of life in the Province – the Hospice Palliative Care Association of PEI and Park Royal United Church. The Fund has been made possible through a caring and generous donation from Eleanor and the late Tom Davies. The Fund will be managed by the Fund Trustees and the Community Foundation of PEI.
Tom Davies, along with his sons Andrew and Angus, operated the KFC franchises on PEI for many years and was a regular supporter of community causes throughout his business and personal life. Many remember KFC’s sponsorship of PEI minor hockey until the PEI franchises were sold in 2017. Tom began his association with the Community Foundation of PEI in 1993 with the Foundation’s inception and continued his volunteer service with the organization for over 25 years until his passing in November 2019 at the age of 82. Tom was always ready to take on new roles to grow the organization and its capacity to do good. “Tom was passionate about the Community Foundation movement and the power of individual philanthropy and collective giving to create positive results at the community level”, said Eleanor. “Tom never missed a chance to explain the Community Foundation movement and to recruit new donors.”
Nancymarie Arsenault, Executive Director, Hospice PEI knows firsthand the Davies’ commitment to ensuring Islanders and their families are supported on their dying journey. Eleanor is the longest serving Hospice PEI member and daughter Ellen has worked for the organization for over twenty years. Nancy Marie also notes, “For a nonprofit like Hospice PEI, being a recipient of an annual grant is important in that it helps us to continue our important work. The fact that it gives many times over is immeasurable as it helps us to plan for our revenue needs over the long term. This gift is a legacy that will give to the organization for many years to come.
The cornerstone of Park Royal United Church was laid on June 22, 1958. For many of the last 63 years, “Tom and Eleanor’s support of the ministry of Park Royal United Church has been outstanding. We are grateful to be receiving this grant which will help us continue to serve communities in Charlottetown and beyond,” says the Reverend Dave Campbell.
“Tom and Eleanor are the embodiment of Islanders’ commitment and generosity to each other. Tom’s enthusiasm and sage advice is greatly missed at the Community Foundation of PEI. We extend our sincerest thanks to Tom’s family for creating the Tom and Eleanor Davies Memorial Endowment Fund, which will help to support the work of two organizations which make such an invaluable contribution to our community“, said Kent Hudson, Executive Director of the Foundation.
