The Dr. Gerry Barrett DAPEI Legacy Fund was established by the Dental Association of PEI (DAPEI) in 2010. An original agreement was signed on November 8, 2010, however the DAPEI wish to make changes to the agreement and change the focus of the granting vision. As such, this new agreement will supersede the original from this point forward.
As the professional representative body for dentistry, the DAPEI sees itself as a partner, a policy advisor, and decision maker with the public, government and its members, regarding the availability, accessibility, and affordability of appropriate and high quality dental services for islanders.
The amount available for granting from the permanent endowment will be determined annually based on The Foundation’s granting policy. The details of the grant will be as follows:
- Scholarship
- An annual scholarship in the amount of $750 shall be available to a deserving student from PEI entering their third or fourth year of a Doctor of Dental Surgery or equivalent program at Dalhousie University, and who has a combination of achieving high marks and of being actively involved in volunteer activities at the dental school student organization or similar organization.
- In the event a suitable student is not available in any given year, funds can be used for another educational institution or funds can be reinvested for the following year.
- As the fund (and the amount available for granting) continues to grow, the amount of the scholarship may be adjusted for inflation or split into multiple scholarships as deemed appropriate by the fund advisors and/or the Community Foundation of PEI.
