The Gordon Doughart Memorial Award Fund was established by his parents, Kathryn and George Doughart, to empower the celebration of the legacy of their son, Gordon Doughart, of Sydney, NS who passed away on Dec. 31, 2014 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Gordon was a talented Red Seal chef with a great sense of humour. His greatest joy was spending time with his beloved family and friends. In addition to his dedication to his family and his solid work ethic, Gordon will be remembered for the tireless work he did to raise awareness of issues related to funding of medication for cancer patients in Nova Scotia.
Gordon Doughart graduated from the Culinary Arts Program at Holland College in 1997 and went on to become a Red Seal Chef. He had a keen interest in athletics and participated in a variety of organized sports throughout his short life.
The Gordon Doughart Memorial Award has been established by Gordon’s family to honour his wishes by assisting a Grade 12 student from Prince Edward Island who plans to attend Holland College and whose family has been impacted by cancer. The Award will be presented annually.
The successful applicant will receive a financial award (amount to be determined annually) applied to his/her student account at Holland College when attendance has been confirmed. It will be the responsibility of the student to have “Confirmation of Attendance” forwarded to the Selection Committee. Where possible the Award will be presented at the high school graduation ceremony.
- Applicants must be registered in Grade 12 in a Prince Edward Island high school with plans to enter a program at Holland College in the fall.
- The applicant or a member of his/her immediate family will have been directly impacted by cancer.
- Applications are also welcomed from students who have not been directly impacted by cancer but who have provided significant volunteer service with local or provincial fundraising initiatives to support cancer research or to benefit a cancer victim. In these cases, the applicant’s essay should indicate the nature of the volunteer service, motivation for involvement and relevant outcomes.
